a Maria Fumaça

After our happy arrival in Minas Gerais in São João del Rei we elected to continue on to our next stop, Tiradentes, via century-old steam train, called locally the “Maria Fumaça,” the smoking Mary.

The bumpy, 40-minute ride out to Tiradentes weaved through townships before slendering out into the open fields, offering us our first views of the Minas countryside.

After getting off of the train in Tiradentes we stared as the still hissing and belching locomotive was manually turned around by six or so men to return to São João!
